Therapy Abroad connects international education with community partnership, cultural learning, and access to health and rehabilitation services. Our aim is to support work that matters locally while preparing students and professionals to practice with greater awareness, humility, and respect.
Teachers, clinicians, community leaders, and families understand their communities in ways a visitor is still learning. Their knowledge helps shape meaningful activities and realistic expectations. We approach international learning as an exchange in which participants listen, contribute within their roles, and learn from local expertise.
Our programs bring together short-term learning, professional education, and longer placements. Government agreements and initiatives add opportunities to collaborate on training and support for teachers and healthcare workers. These relationships give each activity a wider context and a purpose beyond the visiting group’s experience.
Language, identity, family priorities, and experiences with education and healthcare all influence how people communicate and seek support. Our international continuing education unit (CEU) workshops examine cultural and linguistic diversity in professional practice. School district programs extend this learning to educators and school-based teams working with diverse students and families.
We encourage participants to examine their assumptions, ask respectful questions, and consider how local context changes the meaning of what they observe. Travel can start that process; continued reflection and learning help carry it into everyday practice.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals provide a useful framework for connecting our work to broader priorities. We are working to contribute to these goals through education, community collaboration, and support for health and rehabilitation services. The connections below describe our areas of focus.
The World Health Organization identifies rehabilitation as an essential part of universal health coverage. Our supervised learning, professional placements, and healthcare worker training initiatives aim to support partner priorities in communication, function, and access to services. This work connects most directly with SDG targets 3.8 on health coverage and 3.c on the health workforce.
Our work with teachers, schools, and professional learners connects with inclusive education, appreciation of cultural diversity, and international cooperation in teacher training. Relevant targets include 4.5, 4.7, and 4.c. District learning programs and teacher support initiatives offer practical settings for this exchange.
Attention to disability inclusion, language differences, and barriers to participation connects with target 10.2. Our learning experiences encourage participants to consider who can access a service, whose perspective is represented, and what might make participation more equitable.
Collaboration among government agencies, universities, schools, clinicians, and community organizations connects with targets 17.16 and 17.17. Memoranda of understanding can help define shared responsibilities and training priorities; ongoing work gives those agreements meaning.
We ask participants to respect community routines, use resources thoughtfully, reduce avoidable waste, and follow local guidance on environmental and cultural sites. Select useful materials with host partners, seek permission for photographs, and describe communities with dignity. Responsible participation includes recognizing the limits of a short visit and the importance of the work that continues afterward.
No. The SDGs guide our discussion of goals and intended contributions. They do not certify Therapy Abroad or establish that a program has achieved a measurable development outcome.
Look at the host partner’s priorities, the role of visiting participants, and how the activity connects to continuing work. Ask what the program is intended to support and how learning or results will be reviewed.
