Therapy Abroad creates international learning experiences for students, clinicians, and educators in the health and human sciences. Through supervised hands-on learning, cultural immersion, and collaboration with local partners, you can explore your profession, build practical skills, and better understand the communities you may serve throughout your career.
Your field shapes your experience. Our programs span communication sciences and disorders (CSD), speech-language pathology (SLP), audiology, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), nursing, public health, and related areas of psychology, medicine, and mental health. Choose opportunities that match your interests, experience, and academic or professional goals.
Depending on the program, learning may take place in schools, community organizations, clinics, rehabilitation settings, or through visits with local professionals. Some programs emphasize observation and study tours; others include supervised clinical activities or extended placements. Each offers a different way to connect classroom learning with practice.
Our Tykes Camp model brings students and clinicians together around purposeful activities for children. Preparing an activity, observing a clinician, adapting materials, and discussing what happened afterward can turn an unfamiliar situation into a valuable learning experience. Activities vary by destination, community priorities, and participant preparation.
Plan the activity with your group before the camp day.
Watch how an experienced clinician works with the children.
Adjust what you prepared to the children in front of you.
Reflect with your supervisor on what you saw and did.
Start with a student program or a customized faculty-led experience.
Explore graduate SLP externships, OT fieldwork, and clinical placements for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. For eligible SLP graduates, Clinical Fellowship opportunities offer a longer period of professional learning abroad.
Practicing professionals can join international continuing education workshops on cultural and linguistic diversity, pursue professional volunteer placements, or share their experience as clinical supervisors. School districts can work with us to develop international professional learning around diversity, communication, and the needs of their school communities.
Local teachers, clinicians, families, and community organizations bring knowledge that shapes the experience. Our government collaborations, including memoranda of understanding and training initiatives, extend this work to support teachers and healthcare workers. The focus of each partnership reflects the priorities and responsibilities agreed with that partner.
Therapy Abroad creates an interactive educational environment for students and professionals to learn and enhance core competencies in their field, and gain valuable clinical hours while enjoying the richness and challenges of service learning and traveling abroad.
Therapy Abroad was born of the idea that “study abroad” and “service learning” can and should have a lasting and sustainable impact on people and communities. We believe in the power of community-based research and purposeful, sustainable partnerships. Traditional models of study abroad often set students and professionals up for the inevitable traps that have become synonymous with much of the industry, including host-country dependence, lack of a sustainable growth strategy, and culturally insensitive interventions. Our approach strives to develop collaboration and equality between partners in the countries we work in and the students, universities, and professionals we serve.
Our program portfolio reaches across the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Destinations include Belize, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos, Costa Rica, Thailand, and multi-country European experiences. Explore the current program pages for available locations, dates, and disciplines.
Cultural activities and time outdoors remain part of the experience. Learning about local history, food, language, and everyday life helps you understand the place beyond your program setting and enjoy the people you meet along the way.
Opportunities serve undergraduates, post-baccalaureate students, graduate students, eligible clinical fellows, practicing professionals, faculty, and educators. Admission and experience requirements vary by program.
