Explore your profession before your next step

For undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students, time alongside professionals can bring a field into focus. You may observe how a clinician communicates with a family, prepares an activity, or works with a teacher. Use those experiences to ask questions about graduate study, professional responsibilities, and the settings that interest you.

Programs in communication sciences and disorders, audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, public health, and related fields offer different learning opportunities. Choose the format that fits the experience you need.

Reflection

Build skills you can describe

Preparing for a camp activity, adapting to an unfamiliar routine, and discussing an observation with a supervisor give you material for reflection. Consider what you learned about communication, teamwork, problem solving, and professional judgment. Be specific about your contribution and the guidance you received.

The setting

Where you were and who you worked alongside.

02

Your role

What you were responsible for, stated accurately.

03

An example of learning

One specific moment and what it taught you.

04

How it changed your thinking

What you would do differently now.

For an application or interview, describe the setting, your role, an example of learning, and how that experience changed your thinking. Protect client privacy and represent your responsibilities accurately. Observation, supervised participation, and independent professional practice are different experiences.
Graduate Clinicians

Prepare for clinical education

Graduate SLP externships, OT fieldwork, and DPT clinical placements can provide opportunities to learn within a different service system. The right placement depends on your university’s objectives, the host site, available supervision, and your stage of training. Work with your clinical education coordinator before committing to a placement.

Eligible SLP graduates can also explore Clinical Fellowship opportunities. Discuss mentorship, professional requirements, and the proposed role early so you understand how the placement could fit your path toward certification.

Practicing Clinicians

International CEU workshops give practicing clinicians time to examine cultural and linguistic diversity with colleagues and educators. Professional volunteer opportunities and supervisory roles offer additional ways to contribute experience and learn from others. Workshop content and credit eligibility depend on the specific event.

School District Teams

School district teams can connect international professional learning to priorities at home, including communication with multilingual families, inclusive participation, and understanding different cultural perspectives. Customized program planning begins with the district’s learning goals and the people the team serves.

After You Return

Make your learning useful when you return

Keep an accurate record of your activities and approved hours, reflect on questions that remain, and identify a next step. That might be discussing a graduate specialty with an advisor, seeking further supervised experience, or bringing a new question to your school or clinical team. Your experience is most useful when you can explain what it taught you and what you still need to learn.

Frequently asked questions

Q

Will this help my graduate school application

An experience can give you examples of learning, reflection, and informed interest in your field. Admission decisions depend on the university’s criteria and your full application; participation does not guarantee admission.

Q

Can I earn observation or clinical hours

Some programs offer documented hours. The type and amount depend on the activities, supervision, and program format. Ask your university to confirm acceptance and documentation requirements before enrolling.

Q

Is this only for students

No. Therapy Abroad also serves practicing clinicians, educators, school districts, faculty, and eligible clinical fellows through professional learning, placements, and customized programs.
