Our Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) program in Turks and Caicos offers newly graduated speech-language pathologists a unique opportunity to complete their professional requirements while making a meaningful impact in an underserved community. Fellows gain supervised, hands-on experience across diverse clinical settings, working with the Ministry of Education. This immersive, culturally rich experience not only strengthens clinical skills but also fosters adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and a global perspective on speech-language pathology.
Where Am I Going?
Our Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) in Speech-Language Pathology takes place in the breathtaking Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), a British Overseas Territory located at the southeastern end of the Bahamas. Comprised of 40 islands and cays—eight of which are inhabited—TCI offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Ninety percent of the population is of African heritage, and while English is the official language, the islands’ culture reflects a vibrant fusion of traditions and customs rooted in the native Taíno and Lucayan peoples, African ancestry, and the influences of French and Spanish explorers. Fellows will immerse themselves in this dynamic cultural landscape, gaining a deeper appreciation for the historical and social context that shapes communication and service delivery in the region.
Professionally, CFY participants work under the direct supervision of licensed speech-language pathologists, providing evaluation and intervention services to children across a variety of settings, including schools, clinics, and community-based programs. Fellows address a wide range of communication disorders, often working with clients who have had limited or no prior access to SLP services. This environment offers unique opportunities to develop clinical creativity, cultural competence, and resourcefulness in service delivery.
Outside of clinical work, fellows are encouraged to engage with the community through outreach projects, professional development workshops, and collaboration with local educators, healthcare providers, and nonprofit organizations. What Will I Do?
You will work directly with the Ministry of Health to bring services to children in Providenciales and/or Grand Turk. With an intentional focus on cooperative learning and capacity building for both visiting and hosting professionals, our licensed professionals will take you through a cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral and cross-cultural program that will change the way you develop within your field. Students will work directly with pediatric and adult clients.
Therapy Abroad students and staff provide essential services such as screenings, direct rehabilitation, evaluations, referral and/or care to promote fitness, health and wellness and capacity building in the provision of occupational, physical, and speech therapy to individuals, organizations, and communities. You will learn about diverse approaches to teaching and implement methodologies for designing and evaluating learning experiences used in the education of patients/clients, students, colleagues, and the broader community.
Excursions: While you will earn clinical hours, there will also be opportunities for fun, cultural excursions. Some activities planned include snorkeling and swimming at the most beautiful beaches in the world. You will also learn about the history of the islands on a locally guided tour.
Where Will I Stay?
During the CFY in Turks and Caicos, fellows enjoy comfortable private housing in safe, convenient locations close to their work placements and local amenities. Each participant has their own space to relax and recharge after busy days in the field, with housing equipped to meet both personal and professional needs. To ensure independence and flexibility, a car is provided for the duration of the program, making it easy to commute, explore the islands, and engage in community activities. Fellows also receive a meal stipend to support healthy, balanced living while enjoying the diverse flavors of local cuisine. These inclusions are designed to remove logistical barriers so participants can focus fully on their clinical work, cultural immersion, and personal growth.
