Where Am I Going?

Nicknamed the “Jewel” of the Caribbean, Belize is a unique Central American country nestled between Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. Belize was previously known as British Honduras before gaining its independence from Great Britain in 1981. Labeled a developing country, Belize is working hard to bring much needed services to its special needs population. Because of Belize’s history with Great Britain, the official language of the country is English. However, there are about eight different prevalent languages spoken throughout the country. Each language comes with its own bit of history and culture. Throughout your time in Belize you’ll have the opportunity to see and learn about the varying cultures and how they all blend together to create the unique experience that is Belize

When Can I Start My Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY)?

We are now accepting applications for CFY Placements in Turks & Caicos for 2026 and 2027!

Where Will My SLP Clinical Fellowship Placement Be Located?

Our Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) in Speech-Language Pathology takes place in the breathtaking Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), a British Overseas Territory located at the southeastern end of the Bahamas. Comprised of 40 islands and cays—eight of which are inhabited—TCI offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Ninety percent of the population is of African heritage, and while English is the official language, the islands’ culture reflects a vibrant fusion of traditions and customs rooted in the native Taíno and Lucayan peoples, African ancestry, and the influences of French and Spanish explorers. Fellows will immerse themselves in this dynamic cultural landscape, gaining a deeper appreciation for the historical and social context that shapes communication and service delivery in the region.

Professionally, CFY participants work under the direct supervision of licensed speech-language pathologists, providing evaluation and intervention services to children across a variety of settings, including schools, clinics, and community-based programs. Fellows address a wide range of communication disorders, often working with clients who have had limited or no prior access to SLP services. This environment offers unique opportunities to develop clinical creativity, cultural competence, and resourcefulness in service delivery.

Outside of clinical work, fellows are encouraged to engage with the community through outreach projects, professional development workshops, and collaboration with local educators, healthcare providers, and nonprofit organizations. The program fosters both professional growth and personal transformation, equipping fellows with the skills to navigate cross-cultural communication, advocate for underserved populations, and contribute meaningfully to global health initiatives. By the end of the fellowship, participants emerge not only as confident, independent clinicians but also as culturally informed professionals ready to serve diverse communities anywhere in the world.

Immersive Workshop on Cultural and Linguistic Diversity for Slp

Costa Rica: Immersive Speech Pathology Study Abroad

Join us July 19-24, 2026, in Costa Rica. Professionals earn 2.0 ASHA CEUs (20 hours) through interactive workshops, visits to community health centers, rainforest and wildlife excursions, and cultural immersion in Costa Rican traditions. Earn a certificate in cultural & linguistic diversity while networking with professional SLPs from around the world. This year we have chosen a beachfront resort with lush tropical rainforest and pristine beaches. This unique setting offers a balance of professional development, cultural immersion, and leisure, with direct access to white-sand beaches and wildlife-rich reserves.

Costa Rica Awaits! Learn From Each Other. Expand Your Global Perspective. Travel With Intention, Return With Purpose.

Per ASHA (2020), developing cultural competence is a dynamic and complex process requiring ongoing self-assessment and continuous expansion of one’s cultural knowledge. It evolves over time, beginning with an understanding of one’s own culture, continuing through interactions with individuals from various cultures, and extending through one’s own lifelong learning. Cultural competence is increasingly important to eliminate long-standing disparities in the health status of people based on racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

Cultural humility goes beyond cultural competence. It is a dynamic and lifelong process focusing on self-reflection and personal critique, acknowledging one’s own biases. This program seeks to help professionals grow through an immersive, relevant, and impactful experience.

Coursework is designed to bridge theory and practice, providing evidence-based practical tools that you can immediately put to use in your practice as a speech-language pathologist while broadening your cultural perspectives and experiences.

Our workshops are packed with video case studies, discussion points, and opportunities for active learning. Below is an outline of the courses. Part of the day will be spent in the classroom focusing on coursework in cultural and linguistic diversity. The rest of the day we will apply information from our coursework with culturally relevant and enriching activities, including the work with our community partners, local schools, and non-profit organizations while learning about local culture, religion, and customs.

This program is a collaboration between the internationally recognized innovators at Bilinguistics and the award-winning study abroad program facilitators at Therapy Abroad. Speech-language pathologists, university faculty, and graduate SLP students will have an opportunity to travel to the beautiful west coast of Costa Rica and explore new places, cuisines, cultures, ways of living, and approaches to supporting individuals with disabilities. This program offers 20 hours of continuing education for SLPs. This experience is designed to address all of the competencies in cultural and linguistic diversity outlined by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), and many more competencies that will advance your cultural humility.

Join us in Costa Rica July 19-24, 2026. This experience is open to professional SLPs, SLP Graduate students, friends and family.

** University Faculty can reach out to us for special group pricing. Join other universities that incorporate this content into their summer clinical programs or offer it as a short-term experience for students to learn about cultural & linguistic diversity for Slp.

Speech Meets Beach. Earn CEU hours where the rainforest meets the ocean. Wouldn’t you rather earn up to 20 hours of CEU, learn, connect, and explore Costa Rica in one unforgettable week?

Attendees will receive a Certificate in Cultural and Linguistic Diversity that covers the information you need to confidently diagnose and treat diverse populations and provides all the CEUs you need for up to a 2-year earning period. Enjoy all that the country has to offer -food, culture, and amazing activities. Here is a snapshot of what we will be doing.

Each morning of this program, attendees will be immersed in an interactive discussion series (see topics below) and each afternoon, there are activities planned for everyone.

Bring your spouse, friends, and family! We have family rooms available and family-friendly afternoon activities planned. Enjoy the week with family and friends or use this week to kick off a longer adventure around.

Why Costa Rica?

Our goal is that you return to your work re-energized to serve your incredible caseload with fresh tools to understand cultural & linguistic diversity—so you can confidently dismiss more kids who don’t truly have a disorder.

  • Costa Rica is known for its rich Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean heritage alongside Spanish influence. Deepening our understanding of these experiences helps us better connect with the multilingual families we serve.

  • Costa Rica is famous for its pura vida spirit—you’ll experience it through the warmth of its people, colorful festivals, and traditional foods.

  • Rainforests, volcanoes, and beaches—this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to blend professional learning with the natural beauty of Costa Rica.

  • It’s a perfect jumping-off point for more adventure—add extra days to visit Panama, Nicaragua, or explore more of Costa Rica’s breathtaking national parks.

July 20, 2026

Difference or Disorder – Speech Success with Speech Sound Disorders

We begin the week by diving into articulation, phonology, and speech sound disorders. You’ll leave this session with strategies to confidently assess and intervene on the correct sounds, regardless of the languages a child speaks.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit a local health clinic or community center to learn about service delivery in Costa Rica. Through conversations with staff and observations of community-based programs, you’ll gain first-hand insight into how cultural and linguistic diversity shapes access to care. This authentic experience highlights the intersection of speech-language pathology, public health, and cultural responsiveness—setting the tone for the rest of the week.

DAY 3

July 21, 2026

Difference or Disorder – Language, Dynamic Assessment

Language assessment and intervention is all about mastering non-standardized and dynamic assessment strategies to confidently diagnose, gauge progress, and identify goals. This day is dedicated to sharpening your skills in evidence-based, culturally responsive language evaluation.

After the workshop, we’ll head out for a boat safari on the Tarcoles River, home to one of the world’s largest crocodile populations. Along the way, local guides will share insights into Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity, from scarlet macaws to iguanas, as we float toward the Pacific and back.

July 22, 2026

Perfecting Referrals, Re-evaluations to Reduce Caseloads

Half of maintaining manageable caseloads comes from knowing when to refer, when to dismiss, and how to streamline evaluations. This workshop introduces modern methods and tools that empower SLPs to make smarter clinical decisions, reduce caseload sizes, and maximize therapy outcomes.

The afternoon is free for you to design your own Costa Rican adventure. Options include surf lessons on Jaco Beach, a canopy zipline tour, exploring boutique shops and cafés in town, or simply unwinding with toes in the sand. A Note To Graduate Students & Clinical Directors

We know that for many graduate students with classes and clinics, travel during the summer can be a challenge. We currently only offer this 5-day program one time per year. Why do we do this if we know the timing is bad?

Because for working professional SLPs, the timing is perfect. The goal of this program is to get a really diverse group of people together to learn from each other in a culturally rich and diverse place. Everyone will get CEUs including those needed for the new ASHA DEI Certification and a certificate of cultural & linguistics diversity from Bilinguisitcs. For graduate students, we want this event to be the highlight of your journey to becoming an SLP and a truly unique learning environment for everyone involved. This only works if we have a really good combination of professionals and graduate students together and learning from each other. In addition to learning this content, it’s also an amazing way for graduate students to build their professional network, gain mentors in the field, and even find potential CF placements. We know it is a challenge because of the summer clinic and class schedule, but we would love to work with you to make this trip possible. The content, professional experience, and networking go above and beyond anything that is currently offered for graduate students at a typical conference. We hope you will consider making this a part of your graduate school experience.

Cultural competence is increasingly important to eliminate long-standing disparities in the health status of people based on racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds

  • Learn about traditional Thai healing practices and wellness techniques

  • Participate in cultural activities like Thai cooking, Muay Thai, and elephant conservation visits

  • Reflect daily with your team and clinical supervisors to deepen your learning

This program isn’t just a study abroad trip—it’s a chance to grow as a future SLP, build your confidence, and become a more globally aware and culturally responsive clinician.

Free Time & Fun Activities Included In Your Program

A big part of your program in Chiang Mai is having the chance to explore Thailand’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences—all while building friendships that last a lifetime.

Here’s a preview of what you’ll get to do in Thailand.

Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

Spend the day learning about elephant conservation at one of Northern Thailand’s most respected sanctuaries. Feed, bathe, and walk alongside these gentle giants—no riding, just respect.

Hike Scenic Trails & Explore Waterfalls

Chiang Mai is surrounded by lush hills and national parks. Whether it’s a group hike to a jungle waterfall or a sunrise view from Doi Suthep, nature is always just around the corner.

Thai Cooking Class

Learn how to make (and eat!) local favorites like pad thai, green curry, and mango sticky rice with professional Thai chefs. It’s one of our most delicious cultural activities!

Explore Night Markets & Old City

Wander the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar or the charming streets of the Old City, where you can shop for handmade goods, try new foods, or just soak up the atmosphere.

Cultural Workshops & Relaxation

Enjoy optional workshops like Thai language lessons, traditional dance, or meditation with local monks. Want to unwind? Grab a Thai massage or relax at one of Chiang Mai’s rooftop cafes.

Muay Thai Boxing Class

Step into the ring—literally—with a traditional Muay Thai boxing class led by local instructors in Chiang Mai. This isn’t just about kicks and punches; Muay Thai is deeply rooted in Thai culture and known for building discipline, focus, and physical confidence. As future therapists, students explore how movement-based practices like this can promote balance, coordination, emotional regulation, and even trauma recovery. It’s a powerful, energizing experience that blends physical fitness with cultural immersion—plus, it’s a ton of fun!

University Faculty-Led Programs

Therapy Abroad works with universities around the world to build custom international programs. Programs will be built from the ground up and will be driven by your goal, values, and learning outcomes. Our programs are designed for students to gain observation and clinical hours and foster creativity, team building, international exchange, cultural awareness, service, and professional competencies. From flights, insurance, transportation and logistics on the back end, to safety and risk management, curriculum, and leadership on the front end, our goal is to set you up for success. We work with diverse university partners including small liberal arts colleges and community colleges as well as large state universities, private universties, and HBCUs.

Leadership + Capacity Building: This is your most valued asset. Our goal is to make sure that faculty and students feel prepared to be part of a global partnership that contributes to learning on all sides. We will cover best practices in facilitation, safety and risk management, cross-cultural communication and learning methodologies and will set you and your team up for success. We work within the frameworks set forth by professional organizations in the USA such as The American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) and American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and design our programs with rigor and evidenced based practice. This is a fluid, collaborative and open-sourced process and we are committed to helping you feel prepared for your time abroad. We will work directly with your study abroad office or global affairs office to facilitate every aspect of your program.

Safety + Risk Management: With over two decades of experience managing international travel programs on four continents, we have you covered when it comes to safety and risk management. From our research and vetting process during the initial consultation to training and capacity building to our dedication to local emergency response procedures, safety is our number one priority. Our goal is to allow you to focus your attention on your program goals, outcomes, and facilitating an outstanding study abroad and cross-cultural experience for your students.

Educational Programming: We will analyze what learning and service opportunities are available and we will spotlight them in a way that will resonate. These learning opportunities might range from cultural and social in nature, to direct hands-on service-learning requiring expertise in specific areas of speech-language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and applied behavior analysis. Our goal is always to create programs that fit the learning outcomes of the university program and elevate the student learning experience. Next, we will work directly with your faculty and team to collectively determine the methodology that is most appropriate for your program. Lastly, we’ll help you develop tools that can deepen and sustain the learning through projects and experiential practices that have a lasting impact on all involved.
